Learning AI as a Soft Skill

Let’s be real: the robots aren’t taking your job. BUT....

According to hiring decision-makers, the person who knows how to use them just might.

(Ohp! That's a 2026 plot twist.)

Getting comfortable with AI isn't about coding it or being lazy with your work. It's about adaptability, curiosity, fluency, and knowing how to use it thoughtfully and ethically.

And it is a wiz at conflict resolution (but that's a story for another day).

Here’s why knowing how to collaborate with tech is the new career advantage.

  • Feeling overwhelmed, and a little bit iffy with all this new tech and AI popping onto the scene at work. If so, don't worry, you wouldn't be alone.

But here's the hard truth. Ignoring AI literacy could put your job and your whole career at risk. AI literacy isn't about being a coder or a tech wizard. Because Heaven knows I am  neither.

It's actually a soft skill that means knowing how to use AI tools thoughtfully, like ChatGPT, Claude, and other assistants, to boost your productivity.

It's also about understanding AI's limits and using it ethically.

Why does this matter? Because 81% of executives say that they would choose somebody with less experience who knows AI over someone who is more qualified, who does not.

Plus AI is automating routine tasks. So if you fail to keep up, you risk falling behind, losing promotions and even your job.

But here's the good news. Starting is easier than you think. Play around with some AI tools. Learn how to analyze outputs, and even take a course or two online. In fact, LinkedIn alone has over 1,500 AI-focused options. And if your company offers training, take it.

Showing you're willing to learn AI signals your adaptability and keeps you valuable in an ever-changing workplace. Let's face it, AI is not going anywhere and neither should you.

The sooner you embrace AI literacy, the better the chances are of you getting ahead and growing your career.

So tell me down in the comments, what is one step you can take this week to get yourself AI-ready?
