Adapting to the “Forever Layoff”

Layoffs used to be these huge, headline-drawing events... Not so anymore. Now, instead of one moment of disruption, this constant undercurrent of “Am I next?” 👀 has created this low-level anxiety at work.

I mean, I have friends at Meta who are training the AI that will replace them... in the next month!

So it turns out, this isn’t just about job loss, it’s about what uncertainty does to the way we work. Which is to say, your job shouldn’t be your security.

Let’s talk about where to actually build it. 👇🏽

  • We need to talk about something happening in the job market right now that no one is really saying out loud, and it's called the Forever Layoff. If you're feeling a little bit unstable at work lately, you're not imagining it.

Traditionally layoffs were these big, obvious events. One big round, a few headlines, and the company moved on. Not so anymore. Now companies are laying off small groups of people over and over again, just under the radar.

So instead of just one moment of disruption, there's this constant undercurrent  of, " Am I next?!"  And that changes everything. But here's what I want you to hear. Your job was never meant to be your security. Your career is.

Because in a market like this, the people who feel the most secure aren't the ones clinging tightly to their jobs. They're the ones who are investing in what I call career insurance, and that looks like:

    • Staying visible and communicating your impact,

    • Building real relationships both inside and outside your company, and

    • Continuously sharpening your skills.  That means adaptability, communication, and yes, AI literacy.

Because here's the truth: your long-term job security doesn't come from your employer anymore. It comes from you.

Your relationships, your adaptability, and your ability to evolve as things change.

So if things feel a little uncertain right now, you're not behind, you are just responding to a changing market.

The question is, are you building security in the right place?
